Exploring Democracy at Dorchester Arts Collaborative

What Does Democracy Look Like to You?

Spin a Yarn, Weave a Life has joined a diverse group of artists and activists in a grassroots initiative called SERC (Social Emergency Response Centers). SERC is spearheaded by Design Studio for Social Intervention (Ds4Si), an organization working at the “intersections of design thinking and practice, social justice and activism, public art and social practice and civic/popular engagement.”

“The horrifying Trump win underscores the reality that we are all living in a state of social emergency, even if it affects each of us differently.” ~ Ds4Si

At the first SERC, held at Dorchester Arts Collaborative in early 2017, Cheyenne McCarter and Catherine Tutter invited participants to respond to the question, “What Does Democracy Look Like to You?”  After translating their thoughts into potent words and images (see image gallery 2 below), participants created yarns that will be woven into a community fabric of unity and resistance during a future event.
